adrenal-gland
Mon 11 May 2009 10:30:11 PM CDTThe adrenal gland consists of steroid producing cells in three zones: zona glomerulosa producing mineralcorticoids, zona fasciculata producing glucocorticoids and zona reticularis producing androgens. These cells are found in the cortex of the adrenal gland. The medulla of the adrenal gland contains branching and anastomosing cells that produce the catecholamines epinephrine and norepinephrine.
appendicitis
Mon 11 May 2009 10:31:41 PM CDTImage and picture gallery on the histopathology of appendicitis. The appendix contains normally the appearance of colonic mucosa. When inflammed, by a fecalith, appendicitis occurs, which means inflammation of the appendix. Appendicitis is a clinical diagnosis, but on histology we can see transmural inflammation with neutrophils, damage and often ulceration to the surface mucosa and rarely the presence of the fecalith or the other cause of the appendicitis which can be a parasite.
Bone
Mon 11 May 2009 10:33:48 PM CDTBone consists of bone matrix made from mineral and an organic component with osteoid ground substance which is non-fibrous, from a proteoglycan. The organic component is made from type 1 collagen. Bone cells consist of osteoblasts which make bone and osteocytes which are housekeeping cells of bones cell. Osteoclasts break down bone and allow for the release of calcium. Osteoblasts and osteoclasts are seen at the periphery of the bone matrix. Osteocytes are found within the lacunae of the bone matrix.
Breast
Mon 11 May 2009 10:36:52 PM CDTThe breast consists of a ductal lobule system with lobules of ducts all draining to the nipple. The ducts are lined by simple cuboidal cells surrounded by a myoepithelial layer of cells that contract to propel fluid forward. There is an abundance of fat within the breast and lobules vary in size and number depending on age and date of pregnancy.
Cancer Histology
Mon 11 May 2009 10:37:45 PM CDTImages of cancer histology are included here in order to be able to contrast with the normal histology. Basically, cancer histology is much more diverse with large, ugly looking cells arranged in a hazardous pattern without orientation or respecting one another. The cells are highly mitotic often with large nuclei due to reduplication and aneuploidy of there nuclear material.
Colon
Mon 11 May 2009 10:40:50 PM CDTNormal colon histology consists of folds with columnar absorptive cells at the surface and neuroendocrine cells at the base of the folds. The muscularis mucosa consists of thin strands of smooth muscle that act to contract the microvilli and move lodged food. The submucosa, which is underneath the mucosa, consists of glands and vessels. The muscularis mucosa, underneath the submucosa, consists of large strands of smooth muscle arranged perpendicular to one another. Underneath, is the serosa or adventitia depending on which segment of the colon.
