Bone consists of bone matrix made from mineral and an organic component with osteoid ground substance which is non-fibrous, from a proteoglycan. The organic component is made from type 1 collagen. Bone cells consist of osteoblasts which make bone and osteocytes which are housekeeping cells of bones cell. Osteoclasts break down bone and allow for the release of calcium. Osteoblasts and osteoclasts are seen at the periphery of the bone matrix. Osteocytes are found within the lacunae of the bone matrix.
