Normal colon histology consists of folds with columnar absorptive cells at the surface and neuroendocrine cells at the base of the folds. The muscularis mucosa consists of thin strands of smooth muscle that act to contract the microvilli and move lodged food. The submucosa, which is underneath the mucosa, consists of glands and vessels. The muscularis mucosa, underneath the submucosa, consists of large strands of smooth muscle arranged perpendicular to one another. Underneath, is the serosa or adventitia depending on which segment of the colon.
