The esophagus consists of a mucosa, with nonkeratinizing stratified squamous epithelium, lamina propria and muscularis mucosae. Below, there is a submucosa containing secreting glands. Muscularis propria allows for swallowing, consisting of striated muscle in the upper portions of the esophagus to smooth muscle in the lower thirds. And an adventitia.
