Normal Histology | Histology Image Gallery | Gallbladder

The gallbladder is similar in histology to the gastrointestinal tract. The gallbladder consists of epithelium of simple columnar cells. There are deep infolds of the epithelium termed Aschoff's sinuses that can fool many into thinking there is invasive cancer. The epithelium is surrounded by smooth muscle, muscularis externa. Underneath the epithelium, there is a connective tissue lamina propria. There is a small layer of muscle thereafter, and then serosa and adventitia.
