Inflammatory bowel diseases have inflammatory destruction of the colon mucosa and wall and depending on the extent of involvement, one can diagnose crohn's versus ulcerative colitis, as crohns involves the entire bowel wall while ulcerative colitis is restricted to the mucosa mainly.
