Normal Histology | Histology Image Gallery | Stomach

The stomach consists of four sections: the cardia, fundus, corpus and the pylorus (antrum). Histologically, there is a mucosa, epithelium, with a lamina propria and muscularis mucosae. The submucosa is a fibrous connective tissue layer containing the Meissner's plexus. The muscularis externa consists of smooth muscle bundles oriented in three layers, an inner oblique layer, middle circular layer and an outer longitudinal layer. The serosa is the outer connective tissue layer, continuous with the peritoneum.
