The thyroid gland has right, left and pyramidal lobes. There is a connective tissue capsule that sends septae into the thyroid gland. The thyroid consists of thyroid follicles, which have colloid within the center. Theses thyroid follicles are lined by a simple cuboidal to columnar epithelium. The size of follicles usual varies. Thyroglobulin, a glycoprotein is synthesized and secreted into the follicle. The thyroid gland produces thyroid hormone which contributes to the control of metabolism.
