The uterus consists of the endometrium, the uterine cavity, as its inner most layer. The endometrium consists of a functional (menstrual layer) and basal (non-menstrual) layer. The endometrium consists of glands that cycle in response to hormones. The myometrium consists of smooth muscles and is just below the endomtrium. The perimetrium is the loose surrounding tissue of the uterus and the peritoneum surrounds the uterus.
